This study was surveyed to ask smoking status and nicotine dependency of Taegu health college students : male 420, female 954 for one month of June, 2000. The survey asked 19 questions : students’ general characteristics(three questions), smoking status and smoking habit(ten questions), nicotine dependency(six questions). The students were divided into two, such as public health group(public health section and nurse section) and non-public health group(engineering section and section of social practical affairs).
The present ratio of smoking was turned out 70.5% of male, 3.3% of female(p<0.01). In terms of age, the ratio of males was shown : 83.3% of age 25 and the older, and 67.6% of age 20-24(p<0.01), while the female ratio was done : 8.7% of age 25 and the older, and 3.1% of age 20-24. The ratio of non-public health group is higher than that of public health group. Specially, in males, the ratio of non-public health group is also higher : 78.4% of non-public health group and 53.8% of public health group, while in females, the ratio of non-public health group is also higher : 8.8% of non-public health group and 2.2% of public health grou (p<0.01). According to the major of the students, in males, the ratio of health administration department of public health group is the highest(83.3%) and in females, the ratio of radio-technology department of public health group is the highest(7.9%), while financial technology information department of non-public health group of both male and female is the highest : 100.0%, 14.6% respectively. The motivation of smoking was all curiosity : 40.2% of male and 45.2% of female. The males answered that they have started to smoke since high school first or second year(33.1% which is the highest). However, the females have started since middle school(38.7%, the highest). In terms of the place of smoking, 35.7% of male smokes every where, while 38.7% female do at bars or entertaining places(p<0.01). The sexual distribution of nicotine dependency is 57.1% of male and 61.3% of female which are highly nicotine dependency. Throughout the survey analysis, the survey of Taegu health college students is considerable and they got bad damages against the physically and psychologically optimal status. So, the study showed that the education of self health maintenance would be needed to the students for prevent planning.
